Influenza Research

Location: Madison, Wisconsin

The Influenza Research Institute helped make Madison a national hub for genetic research on influenza viruses by providing information needed to fight the deadly strain of avian flu that was circulating globally. The facility was built to support the work of Dr. Yoshihiro Kawaoka, a researcher at the UW-Madison School of Veterinary Medicine and to meet stringent requirements, including Biosafety Level 3-Agriculture specifications, a high containment classification for specific laboratory research protocols.

JSD provided professional engineering and surveying services for the project. Surveying services included topographic and underground utility mapping. Engineering services included preparation of master grading and drainage plans, design of sanitary and water service, and erosion control plans.

The new research space for flu research will include specialized lab facilities, in existing space at University Research Park.
