University of Wisconsin-Madison University Square

Location: Madison, Wisconsin

JSD performed an existing conditions survey for the new University Square site which replaced the existing University Square Shopping Center located on the UW-Madison campus. The new University Square is an 11-story, 1-million-square-foot project including: 350 apartments; 250,000 square feet of university student and health service offices; 140,000 square feet of retail space; and 420 ramp and underground parking stalls.

JSD assembled a three-lot certified survey map, a condominium plat and an ALTA/ACSM land title survey to assist the owners through the design process. Once ground was broken, JSD performed construction staking to ensure the structure was being built with standards of high accuracy. Field work consisted of collecting electronic data of existing topography and utility features. The data was used to develop AutoCAD base maps for architectural design of the proposed building expansions. JSD staff worked with the physical plant supervisors to obtain all utility information within project limits, and added private underground utilities to the survey map. Staff provided detailed drawings of steam tunnel vaults, water pits, communication vaults, and electrical vaults. The $190 million building is jointly owned by the University of Wisconsin and a private developer. This is the largest public-private development in the history of Madison.
