Horicon Marsh International Education Center and DNR Regional Headquarters

Location: Mayville, Wisconsin

JSD staff developed the Master Plan and site design for the new Horicon Marsh International Education Center and DNR Regional Headquarters located within the Horicon Marsh State Wildlife Area.

Sustainable land development and environmental education guided the design of this project which features innovative stormwater techniquest, interpretive signage, an outdoor classroom and a plaza featuring footprints of native Wisconsin fauna.

This design incorporated strategic planning for site development adjacent to the existing wetlands and native habitat. In order to mitigate additional sedimentation and stormwater, this site features integrated parking lot bioswales and four separate stormwater detention basins.

In addition to bioswales and prairie plantings, the details within the paving of the two plazas reflect the environmental education design goal. The main entry plaza design features wildlife footprints of the native species such as turkey, herons and raccoons. The rear outdoor classroom paving design includes a visitor’s map of the Horicon Marsh lands.

JSD provided a design for the facility that both incorporates the educational aspect and the functional requirements for the DNR Regional Headquarters. JSD also worked with the DNR to raise funds for design fees and construction, raising 1.9 million dollars for design fees and construction.
